Oscar Wilde's play 'The Importance of Being Earnest' is a classic comedy that critiques Victorian society through themes of identity, social obligation, and marriage. The plot unfolds with mistaken identities and romantic entanglements, leading to a humorous resolution. Wilde's work highlights the absurdity of social norms and the superficiality of love, suggesting that appearances often take precedence over truth.  

Key Characters & Plotlines:

  • Jack Worthing / “Earnest” A young, respectable bachelor in his early to mid-20s. He is the protagonist, leading a double life as “Jack” in the country and “Ernest” in London.

  • Algernon Moncrieff Also in his early to mid-20s, Algernon is Jack’s witty, idle friend and cousin to Gwendolen.

  • Gwendolen Fairfax Likely in her late teens to early 20s, she is Algernon’s cousin and Lady Bracknell’s daughter, engaged to Jack.

  • Cecily Cardew About 18 years old, she is Jack’s ward and Algernon’s love interest.

  • Lady Augusta BracknellA middle-aged matriarch, in her 50s or older, representing the upper-class social arbiter.

  • Miss PrismAlso middle-aged, she is Cecily’s governess and a symbol of Victorian moral rigidity.

  • Reverend Canon Chasuble Middle-aged clergyman, likely in his 50s.

  • Lane and Merriman –  male servants, any age

     All ages  are flexible up and  down by 5-10 years
