Wilde's work highlights the absurdity of social norms and the superficiality of love, suggesting that appearances often take precedence over truth.
Key Characters & Plotlines:

Jack Worthing / “Earnest” – A young, respectable bachelor in his early to mid-20s. He is the protagonist, leading a double life as “Jack” in the country and “Ernest” in London.

Algernon Moncrieff – Also in his early to mid-20s, Algernon is Jack’s witty, idle friend and cousin to Gwendolen.

Gwendolen Fairfax – Likely in her late teens to early 20s, she is Algernon’s cousin and Lady Bracknell’s daughter, engaged to Jack.
